Gyokuken is a shikigami that appears in Jujutsu Kaisen as part of Megumi Fushiguro's magic technique, the Ten Shadows. When comparing this shikigami with traditional Japanese magic and mythology, some interesting points emerge.

Comparison with Japanese magic

Onmyodo: Onmyodo is a traditional Japanese magic and divination art based on the theory of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. In this art, spiritual beings called shikigami are used as servants. Shikigami are spiritual beings that perform various tasks according to the commands of the servant. Gyokuken also fights according to Fushiguro's commands, so it plays a similar role to the shikigami in Onmyodo.

Twelve Heavenly Generals: In Onmyodo, there are gods called the Twelve Heavenly Generals that correspond to the twelve zodiac signs, and they have been worshiped as the guardian deities of each sign. Gyokuken also has a guardian role like the Twelve Heavenly Generals, in that they specialize in protection and combat at specific times and places.

Comparison with Japanese mythology

Inugami (dog god): Inugami is a spiritual entity that appears in Japanese folklore and mythology. It is a deified dog spirit, and is said to have the power to protect homes and people. Tamainu consists of two bodies, one white and one black, and its existence is reminiscent of the legend of Inugami. In particular, it has similar roles in guarding and attacking.

Yatagarasu (Japanese crow): Yatagarasu is a large three-legged crow that appears in Japanese mythology, and is known as a god of guidance. Tamainu can control shadows and guide Fushiguro in battle, so it can be compared to the role of a guide like the Yatagarasu. Furthermore, just as the Yatagarasu guides the way, Tamainu also helps Fushiguro in battle and exploration.

Magical characteristics

The characteristics and abilities of Tamainu can be said to incorporate elements of traditional Japanese magic and mythology, while adding a modern interpretation. For example, while based on the concepts of Shikigami and Inugami in Onmyodo, the evolutionary process in which the white and black Tama-inu fuse to become "Kon" is an original element unique to modern fiction.

Conclusion

The Tama-inu has many things in common with spiritual beings that appear in traditional Japanese magic and mythology. On the other hand, by incorporating its own evolution and modern elements, it is depicted as a character with new appeal in "Jujutsu Kaisen". By learning about traditional Japanese elements, you can gain a deeper understanding of the appeal of the Tama-inu.
